Coeur artificiel implantable alimenté par un moteur à vapeur

Les premiers travaux portant sur un coeur artificiel remonte en 1957 lorsque Willem Kolff commença ses travaux à la clinique de Cleveland et la première transplantation fut exécutée sur un chien. Quant au premier coeur artificiel implantable alimenté par un moteur à vapeur, il fut inventé en 1971. Le premier volontaire à subir la transplantation d'un coeur artificiel fut Barney Clark en 1982.
